Old Town Dubrovnik "stitched photo"
Day 12, Thursday June 20th, 2013
Today we leave Mostar behind and head to Dubrovnik. We will reach Dubrovnik late in the afternoon. During the drive, we will make a couple of stops. One at the Radimlja cemetery and the town of Stolac where we had a great lunch. The second stop was at the orthodox monastery Tvrdos. Our first stop was on the ourskirts of Stolac to visit a cemetery from the 13th through 15th centuries. This is where we met our local guide Sanel Maric. The giant gravestones here are engraved with spectacular reliefs. The Ottomans arrived soon after and conversion to Islam followed. Sanel Maric then took us on a tour of Stolac. During the war in the early 1990's, most Muslims fled to Mostar and the town was taken over by Croats. Sanel works for a local organization that is trying to transcend the scars of the recent war. You can view the cemetery and Stolac photos to the left. |

The second stop on the way to Dubrovnik was at the orthodox monastery Tvrdos. We toured the monastery with a local monk. Of course the monastery also had a winery for financial support. Of course after sampling the wine we had to purchase some. Slides of this tour are at left. |
We arrived at the Aquarius Hotel late in the day. The Aquarius is located in the Lapad district of Dubrovnik. We had some time to stroll around the area and make a quick visit to Old Town Dubrovnik for dinner. Take a look at the pictures to the left. |
Day 13, Friday June 21st, 2013
This morning we met our local guide for a tour of Old Town Dubrovnik. It was amazing to learn that Dubrovnik was devastated by Croatia's violent split from Yogoslavia in 1991. Today it is totally rebuilt. The main reminders of the war are the newer brightly colored roof tiles. Take a look at the slides to the right. |

After the morning tour, we had some free time to spend in the afternoon. We walked the city walls of Old Town Dubrovnik to get some pictures. As you can see from the slides to the right, we got carried away. |
