Church of the Assumption on Lake Bled Island
Day 3, Tuesday June 11th, 2013
This morning was a short bus ride from Ljubljana to Bled. At bled we visited the Bled Castle. The castle is about 1,000 years old and was the seat of the Austrian Bishops of Brixen. They controlled Bled in the Middle Ages.
The most spectacular thing about the castle today are the views of Lake Bled. |
|
The views of Lake Bled and the castle from the walking path around the lake are also awesome. I couldn't stop taking pictures. |
Before World War II, Tito had a villa on Lake Bled that he used for a summer residence. His guests included the likes of Indira Gandhi, Nikita Khrushchev, Kim II Sung and Raul Castro.
The ballroom walls on the second floor are decorated with his Socialist Realist wall murals some of which you can see to the left. |
|
Leaving Bled, we continued on to Bovec, Slovenia by taking the scenic Vrsic pass through the Julian Alps. Along the way we made a couple of stops.
One stop was for a small Russian chapel built to pay respect to the Russian POW'S who died when an avalanche tore down the mountain in 1916. The road was built during World War I by more than 10,000 Russian POW's. We also made a stop for lunch in the beautiful Julian Alps. We continued on and reached our hotel and had a great dinner in the neat little town of Bovec. To the left are slides of our travel from Bled to Bovec. |
Day 4, Wednesday June 12th, 2013
This morning we left Bovec and headed to Motovun driving in the wonderful Soca River Valley. We stopped in Kobarid to visit a World War I museum. Some of the fiercest fighting in World War I took place in the Soca River Valley
|
Along the way to Motovun we stopped at a winery for some great wine tasting and a light lunch which proved very good. See the gallery to the right for some pictures of this adventure. |
|
After we left the winery, we continued our way to the hilltop town of Motovun. We arrived late in the afternoon just in time to walk the fortified ramparts and view the panorama of the town and valley below. We finished the evening with dinner on a terrace with a great view of the sunset. You can view the pictures to the right. |
|
Tomorrow we head out from Motovun for some sightseeing.
